The Story

About This Place

On Hàng Gai — one of the Old Quarter's busiest silk-and-souvenir streets — MẸT Vietnamese restaurant & Vegetarian Food 5 has quietly built one of Hanoi's most-reviewed dining records: 23,369 Google ratings averaging 4.9, a figure that places it among the highest-rated restaurants in the city by volume. The focus is vegetarian Vietnamese cooking, a category that rarely dominates in a district better known for bún chả stalls and bánh mì carts, which makes the crowd size here telling. The Hoàn Kiếm location puts it within easy reach of Hồ Hoàn Kiếm, the Night Market stretch, and the main cluster of Old Quarter guesthouses, so the dining room draws a broad mix: solo travelers eating light between sights, local office workers, and health-conscious regulars who return specifically for plant-based takes on Vietnamese staples. The name itself — mẹt being a flat bamboo tray used in Vietnamese markets — signals an orientation toward everyday, unfussy eating rather than fine-dining theater. For visitors working through the Old Quarter's typically meat-heavy street food circuit, this is a reliable reset: filling, familiar in flavor profile, and priced for the neighborhood. The high review count also means consistency is built in — a kitchen producing erratic food doesn't sustain that kind of rating across tens of thousands of visits. Among Hoàn Kiếm's vegetarian options, which tend toward either tourist-facing menus or temple-adjacent simplicity, MẸT sits in a practical middle ground.

If you’re looking for a great meal but want to escape the chaotic street drinking, blaring music, and rowdy tourist crowds, this is the absolute best spot in Old Quarter, Hanoi. It’s such a comfortable, peaceful escape. Plus, their menu has English translations, which can be hard to find at a lot of the local street spots. The food was incredible. I had the Gà Kho Lá Chanh (chicken with ginger and lemon grass) and the seafood spring rolls, and both were absolutely delicious. Great service from John and was welcoming. If you want fantastic food in a relaxed, chill setting, definitely check this place out!

The food was really good, and the portions were so generous! I even had to ask for a takeaway because I was too full to finish everything. A special thanks to Joy for her wonderful service. I wasn't sure how to eat the dish I ordered, and she kindly showed me how to wrap and enjoy it properly. She was so patient and thoughtful, which made the whole experience even better. I truly enjoyed my meal here and would definitely recommend this place to anyone visiting Hanoi!
