RAILWAY TUAN CAFE (The ORIGINAL) ) - Cafe in Hanoi
About This Place
Trần Phú's train corridor is one of Hanoi's most photographed stretches, and Railway Tuan Cafe stakes its claim as the original outpost that turned a working rail line into a destination. The address itself signals the draw — 'chắn tàu' means train barrier, and the cafe sits close enough to the tracks that passing trains rattle the cups. That spectacle, a freight or passenger train threading between low-rise shophouses with only feet of clearance, pulls a steady stream of visitors through Hoan Kiem's quieter residential lanes, away from the lake-front tourist circuit.
The cafe operates as both a viewing platform and a functioning coffee shop, serving Vietnamese drip coffee and standard café drinks. With a 4.9 rating across more than 2,200 Google reviews, the experience holds up beyond the novelty — regulars suggest arriving early to secure a seat with a direct sightline to the tracks before the midday crowd fills the narrow space. The setting is unpolished and deliberately so: tiled floors, open windows, the occasional rumble underfoot. It draws photographers and backpackers alongside Hanoians who have watched the trains pass for years.
Within Hoan Kiem, most cafes compete on aesthetics or menu breadth. Railway Tuan Cafe competes on something harder to replicate — a lived-in location where the city's working infrastructure becomes the main event. The 'original' designation in the name matters here; several nearby spots have opened to capture the same foot traffic, but this address predates the trend. For visitors with one afternoon in the Old Quarter, it offers something Foody.vn rankings rarely surface: a setting that is specific to Hanoi and nowhere else.
Reviews
Perfect point to see the train passing, with great drinks and prices matching the touristy spot. Arrived at 20:40 to see the 21:15 train: was early enough to easily get a place, but soon filled up then. Egg coffee was nice, service was friendly, informal. Cash only. There was an other place with a balcony on the opposite site, but I am not sure that was a better spot to see the passing train - you try it
I like the atmosphere but foods are not good. I ordered friend rice with chicken and Latte. Coffee is nice but not the fried rice. Service was good and friendly.
One of the best spots around to watch the trains go by. The coffee tastes very good, but honestly the location is the real highlight here. If you enjoy train watching, this place is hard to beat. The owner is extremely friendly and welcoming. It’s a good idea to ask him where the best place is to sit if you want a great view of the trains. Try to come a bit earlier so you can get a good spot. Just keep in mind: if you don’t have a seat, you may be asked to leave the platform area or section, so it’s better to arrive early and secure a place. Great coffee, great atmosphere, and an excellent location for train enthusiasts.
It was our first time here and we loved it! The owner went viral on TikTok so you know we had to come support! We ordered two mango banana smoothies, beef fried rice and fried chicken skewers. Everything was 10/10. We stayed for a couple hours to hang out with the owner. Such nice a guy!
